Revelation 19:17-21

17 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and he cried out with a loud voice, saying to all the birds which fly in midheaven, “Come, assemble for the great supper of God, 18 so that you may eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of commanders and the flesh of mighty men and the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them and the flesh of all men, both free men and slaves, and small and great.” 19 And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies assembled to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. 20 And the beast was seized, and with him the false prophet who performed the signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image; these two were thrown alive into the lake of fire which burns with brimstone. 21 And the rest were killed with the sword which came from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse, and all the birds were filled with their flesh. (NAS) Be Ready to Eat

Revelation 19:9 And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.” (NAS)

This is obviously the meal we would like to participate in after we are with the Lord and the Bride and the Groom enter into a marriage relationship. It is called the Marriage Supper of the Lamb.

Now there is another feast of which I doubt you would even consider sitting down to eat. It is called the “Great Supper of God” It is a meal of judgment not victory. It is not to celebrate the union of Jesus the Groom and the church, the Bride of Christ.

It is part of the final judgment on the Beast and the False Prophet and their followers.

17 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and he cried out with a loud voice, saying to all the birds which fly in midheaven, “Come, assemble for the great supper of God, 18 so that you may eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of commanders and the flesh of mighty men and the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them and the flesh of all men, both free men and slaves, and small and great.” (NAS)

The angel has the sun at his back and appears in radiance as the invitation to the Supper of God is given. It is not the people who are invited by the angel. It is the birds. But why birds? They are the scavengers.

ILL> I lived in Texas for several years. I noticed something that I have not seen in any other state. There is a lot of road kill in Texas. Everything from rabbits and coyotes to mice, deer, dogs, cats, squirrels, skunks, and armadillos. Driving down some of the smaller farm to market roads you would see several vultures in the middle of the road. You had to slow down because they were not eager to move. They were having their supper.

This is the picture of the Supper of God. The angel calls the vultures to consume the dead. In the ancient culture as well as today’s culture you did not leave a body for the critters to eat. They were buried. Here is a picture of not only death, but the humiliation of the dead bodies being eaten by birds. It was not just the humans, but the Bible tells us: 18 so that you may eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of commanders and the flesh of mighty men and the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them and the flesh of all men, both free men and slaves, and small and great.” (NAS)

Those who had received the mark of the beast and followed and worshiped this leader, most likely the head of the revived Roman Empire, all died. In this great battle the enemy was destroyed. And then the clean up crew was called in to eat the remains. Not a pretty picture.

It is a bit reminiscent of the end of Ahab and Jezebel in the Book of 2 Kings.

2 Kings 9 30 When Jezebel, the queen mother, heard that Jehu had come to Jezreel, she painted her eyelids and fixed her hair and sat at a window. 31 When Jehu entered the gate of the palace, she shouted at him, “Have you come in peace, you murderer? You’re just like Zimri, who murdered his master!” 32 Jehu looked up and saw her at the window and shouted, “Who is on my side?” And two or three eunuchs looked out at him. 33 “Throw her down!” Jehu yelled. So they threw her out the window, and her blood spattered against the wall and on the horses. And Jehu trampled her body under his horses’ hooves. 34 Then Jehu went into the palace and ate and drank. Afterward he said, “Someone go and bury this cursed woman, for she is the daughter of a king.”

35 But when they went out to bury her, they found only her skull, her feet, and her hands. 36 When they returned and told Jehu, he stated, “This fulfills the message from the Lord, which he spoke through his servant Elijah from Tishbe: ‘At the plot of land in Jezreel, dogs will eat Jezebel’s body. 37 Her remains will be scattered like dung on the plot of land in Jezreel, so that no one will be able to recognize her.’” (NLT) What an ending to a life of crime. Jezebel is equated with evil. Her name is spoken to describe someone who is mean, cruel, viscous, and just plain bad. If you wanted to call, especially a woman, some derogatory name; you would call her Jezebel. Elijah had prophesied her end; she would be eaten by the dogs, her remains scattered like dung on the plot of land in Jezreel, so that no one would recognize her. And it happened as the prophet had spoken. Jehu was coming. No love was lost between Jezebel and Jehu. She dressed up, put on makeup and waited his coming. She yelled out the window some accusations of him being a murderer. A couple of men standing by her were ordered by Jehu to throw her out the window. They complied and she hit the ground dead. The horses ran over her corpse. In the meantime Jehu decided to eat and drink. Finally thinking of her body down on the ground suggested she be buried. Too late. The dogs had already eaten her. The only thing left was her feet, hands and her skull.
If someone would be disgraced in death it would be this way. Dogs were not considered something to be desired. Even the Apostle Paul referring to the Legalist of his day warned the people to beware of the dogs.

Vultures would likewise be a disgrace to a corpse. And to remain unburied, especially the daughter of a king would be the ultimate disgrace.

Expect a pay day someday.

19 And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies assembled to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. 20 And the beast was seized, and with him the false prophet who performed the signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image; these two were thrown alive into the lake of fire which burns with brimstone. (NAS)

The final battle of good and evil is taking place. The King of Kings and Lord of Lords is on His horse and He and His army are attacked by the Beast and the False Prophet. These are the same Beast and False Prophet we have been reading about throughout the Book of Revelation. Their end is coming. The one who sat on the horse and His army respond and the Beast and False Prophet are arrested and thrown alive into the lake of fire which burns with brimstone.

We have heard of the brimstone before as God destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah with fire and brimstone. Our modern weapon of destruction that would do a similar burn would be napalm. The horrific pain that would be experienced would be beyond imagination.

Judgment is for all who reject Jesus.

21 And the rest were killed with the sword which came from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse, and all the birds were filled with their flesh. (NAS)

No one was left out. Those who received the mark of the beast and worshipped him were a part of the judgment. TV news this week. An interview with a futurist. She said she believed would eventually do away with money. No more dollar bills, or euros. The person interviewing her suggested we were already doing it with debit and credit cards. Finally near the end they mentioned the possibility of chips being placed under the skin to be scanned. It was as if they had come up with a brand new theory that only a futurist could perceive. Sorry someone already told us about that 2000 years ago. They who worshipped the beast and the false prophet and received the mark were killed by the Word of God. They were destroyed by the one who is Faithful and True. They were judged by the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. In the end the birds came and ate their remains. In the end judgment is for all who reject Jesus.

John 1: 10 He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him. 11 He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. 12 But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. 13 They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God. (NLT) 16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. (ESV)

Have you experienced your spiritual birth, being born again, regenerated, and made new? Have you placed your faith in Christ? Turned from your sin of lack of faith and trusted that Jesus, God in Human form. Do you believe that He died for you and arose from the dead to give you His life.
